UPDATE CYCLEVIN

Though the model debuted in 1985, Suzuki’s legendary Gixxer line did not make its way to the US until 1986. The changes were minor – better headlights, a revised belly pan, and 25mm longer swingarm, but Americans were probably too busy drooling over the first true street-legal race replica sold in this market to notice.

Those aren’t just our words – Suzuki specifically marketed the Gixxer as a “racebike for the street” and backed it up with a design that featured a 749cc inline-four motor fed by 31mm Mikuni carbs and Suzuki’s Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber with 16 valve heads. It put down 80 horsepower at the rear wheel (106 at the crank) through a six-speed transmission, and impressively the engine weighed 30 pounds less than the previous GS750 motor (even though that was air-cooled).

Weight savings were not just limited to the motor. The whole bike weighed just 388 pounds dry, which was a revelation at the time. The GSX-R750 inspired copycats from the other Japanese manufacturers and impressively, it’s still in production today (though it hasn’t seen significant changes since 2011).

Located at our facility in Santa Monica, California, this Gixxer (VIN: JS1GR75A3G2104957) is a 49-state model that is offered on a clean California title.

The seller purchased the bike on eBay from the original owner in 2016. The previous owner bought it new in 1986 from a dealer in Pennsylvania. “Shortly after buying it, had a ‘scary moment’, and put it on display in his den/office with only 1,300 miles.”

Here’s the rest of the story, per the seller: “His wife had redecorated years earlier and it was sitting in a corner of the garage collecting dust. I flew out after winning the auction to verify the condition and mileage and pay the balance. I shipped it back to CA and cleaned and detailed it. New gas, oil and filter, and a new lithium battery and it started right up. It had the original tires on it that looked brand new but were hard as a rock. I put new tires on it and was able to get it registered here in CA after trying a few times (it’s a 49 state bike and CA can be difficult if the bike has less than 7,500 miles).”

“Over the years it got a few scuffs and the regular cracks in the fairings and bodywork, mostly due to garage mishaps. In early 2020 it had all the fluids done, as well as a NOS rear master cylinder, and fork seals. I put about 600 miles on it and it rides perfect, and gets massive attention everywhere it goes. It’s 100% stock. The cases have never been cracked; the carbs never worked on. The original owner drained all the gas when he displayed/stored it.”

The odometer now shows 1,925 miles.
The odometer shows 1,938 miles.

“Iconic’s White Glove service fixed any paint and bodywork blemishes and lined the tank.”

The sale includes the original Suzuki Service Manual, Owner’s Manual, tool kit, Suzuki “Riding Tips” booklet, the two original keys and a third spare Suzuki key made in 2016, as well as a bunch of period magazines, clippings, and posters: “The original owner had all this decorating his GSX-R ‘Wall of Fame’.

The seller sums this bike up by saying “the bike and all the paraphernalia are truly like time travel back to 1986.” Here’s your chance to snag a time machine.
